April 1, 2024 Greeting’s NWILCS Families, Today, we are experiencing sewage issues at our Primary Campus. While everyone is able to use the restroom, the toilets are backing up in the main building. We have been working with a plumbing company as well as the Gary Sanitation Department who cannot provide us with a timeline of completion before the end of day. At this time, we have made the very difficult decision to make tomorrow an E-learning day at the Primary Campus. We understand the inconvenience this may cause but want to make sure all scholars and staff are operating in sanitary conditions. All scholars must be online via Google Meets at 8:30am to start their instruction. An instructional packet will be sent home for your scholar to complete. This is how we will determine the attendance for the day. If your scholar does not have access to technology, please reach out to your scholar's teacher or school leader via email. January 17, 2024 Dear Parent(s)/Guardian(s), This morning, we became aware that there was a weapon discharged in the boys bathroom of our Gary Lighthouse College Prep Campus. We are currently on a hard lockdown and police are assisting us in searching the building. We performed checks on lockers, bookbags and body checks on all of the scholars. During the search, we did uncover a weapon. The scholars were identified, the parents were contacted, and the proper authorities were made aware of the actions. It is standard practice that if incidents of this magnitude occur, the police department will support the school in these situations and will provide instructions for us to follow. No one from our school community was injured or harmed and we have no belief that any of our scholars are in danger. School safety is of the utmost importance, so we wanted to outline critical details from our safety plan at NWILCS - College Prep that are in action so you are aware: ● College Prep has additional staff members monitoring the inside and outside for safety throughout the school day. ● The extra doors to the building have alarms on them so we know when someone has entered or left the building due to the alarm sounding. ● No visitors are allowed inside the building without an appointment. Anyone needing to discuss matters with the Front Office will not be permitted past the vestibule. ● Interior doors to the school are secure, not allowing access to the building. ● All doors to the building open for arrival and dismissal have school personnel posted so unauthorized people cannot enter the building. We ask that moving forward; you also check your scholar's book bag before they leave for school, in conjunction with our bag checks. We also ask that you continue to speak with your scholar around appropriate social media usage. Please continue to reinforce with your scholars that they report to an adult if they hear or see something that could potentially cause harm to our school community. Our scholars usually do well with reporting things, but we appreciate the added support as we work together to keep everyone in our school community as safe as possible. Safety is our number one priority next to fulfilling our mission of educating our students. On Tuesday, January 16, 2024 we will switch over to an e-learning day. All students must be online via Google Meets at 8:30am to start their instruction. This is how we will determine the attendance for the day. Parent-Teacher Conference and Report Card pick will be being held on Friday, October 27, 2023 from 9am-6pm at each campus. Please feel free to stop in at your campus as Conferences will be going on most of the day. Please check in with your scholar's campus directly to see if they have more specifics.

PSAT will take place on Wednesday, October 25th. All students in grades 9-11 will be testing. Our NWILCS teachers were preparing for our scholars to return to school next week Wednesday, August 9th through professional development led by multiple district leaders!

We just wanted to go over a few items in regard to acceptable and unacceptable uniforms for the upcoming 23-24 school year. The policy is as follows: Tops: NWILCS Navy Polo top available at Twin City Uniforms (1101 W Chicago Ave, EC, IN 46312 (This is a large yellow building) and/or Brandy's This Is It (5306 W 25th Ave, Gary, IN 46406) (No plain navy polo shirts or either of the old Lighthouse Academies polos) Bottoms: Navy or Khaki pants (NO black pants, leggings, or sweatpants) Shoes: Closed toed shoes (No crocs, flips flops, slides, open toed shoes, slippers, house shoes) If you have questions or concerns, please contact your campus's school office. As a part of our commitment to safety and our efforts to make sure that ALL staff at ALL campuses are trained and ready to assist in an emergency situation; we had multiple training days for CPR & AED Training to accommodate everyone. On both July 13 and July 20, 2023 , staff from all campuses and the district of NWILCS came together for this training at LCPC. Please see some of the pictures that we took of this training.

This is a reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday, April 12 will be a half day of school at all campuses. The College Prep Campus will release at 11:30am while all other campuses (Primary, Upper & EC) will release at 12:30pm. Please pick your child up promptly at dismissal.

FOR MORE INFORMATION: Jessica Beasley Executive Director jessica.beasley@nwilcs.org Date of Release: 4/11/203 Weapon Retrieved at East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School During morning arrival, the team of East Chicago Lighthouse Charter School (ECLCS) was made aware of a weapon in possession by a scholar who attends this campus. Following our standard protocols, the ECLCS leadership team moved into swift action to ensure the safety of all staff and scholars. The school building was placed on a soft lockdown and the scholar in question was detained and searched. A weapon was found and secured without incident. The East Chicago Police department was called and arrived on scene immediately. With the support of the East Chicago Police officers, a thorough investigation was conducted. At no point was there a threat or any harm brought to any member of the ECLCS community during this time. Upon completion of the investigation, the building was taken off lockdown and resumed classes and activities. The safety of our ECLCS community is of the utmost importance to our team. The training of our team and the prompt and thorough response of the East Chicago Police department allowed for a successful resolution to this matter. We will continue to be diligent in our effort to practice our safety measures and our school and district administration will examine this situation with the hopes of enhancing our protocols in the future.

This is a reminder that NWILCS will have an Asynchronous E-learning day for scholars on Thursday, April 6. We will also be holding Parent-Teacher Conferences that day at all campuses from 9am-6pm. Please check in with your campus's office for specific lunch times and breaks. If you have any additional questions regarding e-learning or PTCs, please contact your school's office. Spring Break will be Monday, March 27 through Friday, March 31, 2023. School offices will have shorter hours and may be closed some days during the break.
